I have been suffering from migraines for more than 20 years. A few years ago, I decided to think of myself as a migraine WARRIOR. I use the term warrior because I made a choice not to be a migraine sufferer. This is not an easy feat. Why? Because migraines are not just headaches. Migraines cause excruciating, debilitating pain that causes you to lose your ability to function, to see, to think, to work, to sleep, to take care of your children. The list goes on and on. I am often asked how I can function with a migraine. My answer is always the same: because I have to. As a working, married woman with three children, I don’t have the option to stop when a migraine hits. I used to hide my migraines thinking that I could lose my job or appear weak. Now I know: I am not weak. And there IS hope. I found treatments that helped me and allowed me to start the business I had been dreaming about for years. There are still days that migraines make me cry in pain and frustration, but they are fewer and farther between, and that makes a big difference. For anyone out there who is suffering from migraines, know that you are not alone, and there are so many more medical options to treat and prevent them than ever before. I am always amazed at how many people I meet who are suffering and unaware or don’t have access to the treatment possibilities out there. Please do not suffer in silence. Reach out if you need help. You are not weak. You are a warrior. And there IS hope.

When I was little, I always knew I wanted to have a BIG life. I didn’t know what that meant exactly, but I knew I was going to work hard, and I would make it happen. When I started my career in NYC, working with some of the most brilliant and financially successful people on the planet, I thought that meant climbing the corporate ladder, accruing higher titles, and making a lot of money. So that is what I did. Until I burned out. Now, at 45 and as the owner of my own business, having a BIG life has a totally new definition. Financial success is still important, but not for what it can buy. It is important for the freedom it provides. The freedom to not stress about money. The freedom to know your family is provided for. The freedom to help others. Now, having a BIG life means having a healthy, loving marriage. Spending real quality time with my children and family. Creating opportunities for my team so that they can pursue their BIG lives, whatever that means for them. And enjoying my work by making a positive impact on my clients’ lives—both by helping them in their work, and through the personal relationships that energize me. As so many smart, successful women before me have said: you can have it all, just not at the same time. There is truth in that statement. My best advice to young women who want to have a career AND a family is: do it. Do it all, but make sure you are focused on loving yourself and pursuing your dreams in a healthy way. You will never regret spending time with the ones you love.
